چکیده

A simultaneous object discrimination task for food reward was elaborated in normal cats and in cats deprived of pattern vision from birth. In the latter the learning was more difficult and retraining was necessary after a preoperative retention period. In both groups the cortical projection of central vision was removed in areas 17, 18 and 19. In deprived cats the deficit following the cortical lesion was less than in normal animals. It is concluded that deprived cats used visual cortex less in learning and thus they learned more slowly but were less deficient postoperatively.

Audio-visual targeting reflex in cats deprived of pattern vision from birth.

It is well known that visually guided behavior is impaired in visually deprived cats. In particular, visual discrimination learning is strongly affected. In an earlier paper prepared in this Laboratory (2) such deficit was observed in cats visually deprived by means of linen hoods, which prevented pattern vision. In the present paper the targeting (orienting) reflex evoked by a sound from a vis...

Binocularly deprived cats are normal in visual discrimination learning in a simple apparatus.

Pattern discrimination learning was compared in three groups of cats: reared in normal conditions, reared in the laboratory with opened eyes, and deprived of patterned vision from birth. A four-choice apparatus without partitions was used. The figure of a disc was reinforced with food, whereas a cross, triangle and square were not. All groups reached criterion after similar numbers of trials an...

The effect of cortical lesions upon visual discriminations in binocularly deprived cats.

Four cats were raised with binocular eyelid suture and, after their eyes were opened, were trained on a series of discrimination tasks. They performed at normal rates on the brightness task but indicated some difficulty with the pattern tasks. They then received large, bilateral occipito-temporal cortex ablations. Postoperatively, this in no observable way affected their visually guided orienti...

Go-no go differentiation to visual stimuli in cats with different early visual experiences.

In a previous paper (1) it was found that in cats deprived from birth of pattern vision with hoods, simultaneous object discrimination was dramatically impaired. In this paper go-no go differentiation is studied in such cats. The specific details of the methodology have been elaborated previously (1). The experiments were performed on 13 cats bred in the laboratory. The 8-th day after the birth...

Compensatory plasticity and sensory substitution in the cerebral cortex.

Cats deprived visually from birth show few overt impairments in their natural behavior. Therefore, they seem well suited as an animal model for the study of compensatory plasticity after early vision loss. It can be demonstrated that binocularly deprived cats show improved abilities of auditory localization, and at least equal tactile behavior compared to normal controls. Within the anterior ec...
